Jack L. Herriman
1959 - 1960

Jack HerrimanJack Herriman began his music career early, taking conducting lessons and being Concertmaster during his senior year at Paseo High School (MO).  After graduating, he joined the Navy and was stationed in Seattle where he was assigned to the only band that had a string section, outside the main one in Washington D.C.  During his conducting years in the Navy, Mr. Herriman met and worked with big musical names, including violinist Peter Marsh, singer Mel Torme, and Jack Benny in a special performance in 1951 for President Harry S. Truman.

After his discharge from the Navy in 1955, Mr. Herriman earned his Bachelor's Degree at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, then earned his Master's Degree at Northwestern University.  During these years, he attended special conducting seminars and study sessions with Leonard Bernstein and Fritz Reiner.

After earning his Master's Degree in 1959, Mr. Herriman briefly joined the music faculty of Manchester College, where he filled in at the request of Vernon Stinebaugh while Stinebaugh was away completing his Doctoral studies.  He then returned to Kansas City as Assistant Conductor of the Kansas City Philharmonic under renowned conductor Hans Schweiger. During his years in Kansas City, Mr. Herriman kept a busy schedule, also serving as Assistant Conductor of the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, and Music Director of the Kansas City Ballet and the Kansas City Youth Symphony.

Mr. Herriman's next stop was in nearby Topeka, Kansas, where he led the Topeka Civic Symphony from 1976 to 1988, during which time they grew to officially become the Topeka Symphony Orchestra.  He also taught at Washburn University in Topeka during this time, and spent the summers travelling to Colorado to teach at a Music Camp that lasted 17 years.

Mr. Herriman currently is the Music Director and Conductor of the Chandler Symphony Orchestra in Chandler, Arizona, a position he has held since 1991.  He also performs with the Chandler Symphony String Quartet and is Music Director and conductor of the Arizona Chamber Symphony.
